Honey is often seen as the healthier alternative to sweeteners and sugar but little do people know of how honey can help our skin, hair and nails stay trouble free and well nourished. Raw honey (honey that isn’t treated with heat or pasteurized) contains enzymes and phytogenic anti-oxidants to help combat many skin issues we all suffer on a daily basis.
Korean people refer to great skin as “honey skin” simply because of how using honey as a staple skincare ingredient can eliminate signs of aging, acne and give you porcelain like skin. Here, I’ll list some ways you can implement honey into your regime to have beautiful skin, hair and nails.
1) Facial Mask
Honey is great for nourishing skin, as it protects and delivers the bottom layers of skin superb hydration with it’s humectant property. This means, it draws all the moisture from the air around us into where it is applied. It also helps to brighten the skin and even out skintone, whilst refining the skin texture for smoother skin. Honey also prolongs the effects of aging as well as help detox skin.Simply
Simply grab some honey and apply to the face, following your natural skin texture and leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
2) Pore Cleanser
Honey is naturally anti-bacterial, which prevents acne from occurring on the skin, particularly in the pores. The enzymes in honey also help to clear out the pores of excess dirt and sebum, whilst tightening and restricting the pore size.
Mix some honey and coconut oil together and buff gently along your nose and cheeks in a ratio of 1:2 and rinse with warm water.
Honey helps to brighten dull skin; mixed with other ingredients, it can help clear pores whilst making skin radiate from within.
Mix honey with baking soda in a 2:1 ratio and buff skin gently to remove dead skin cells, wash with warm water.
Mix honey with cinnamon powder at 1:2 ratio and scrub lips for soft, kissable lips and to promote healthy blood circulation around the mouth area.
4) Scar fader
Honey is known to lighten and even out the skin tone, as well as help repair and regenerate skin with its anti-inflammatory properties.
Mix honey and olive oil in equal ratio and apply to affected areas, gently massaging for a minute or so before rinsing off with warm water, or a steam towel.
5) Acne Prevention
With it’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, honey keeps away bacteria from damaging the skin causing breakouts. It also helps to alleviate the soreness and redness from acne.
Simply mix honey and lemon juice together in 3:1 ratio and apply to the effected area as a mask, for 15-20 minutes before washing off with warm water.
6) Antioxidant Bath
Honey helps to prolong the effects of aging and helps to regenerate skin, so by adding honey to your bathtub before soaking, it will help to improve the skin on your body.
7) Cuticle Moisturizer
Honey is great for nourishing dry skin and healing, and mixed with an acid, it helps to restore the natural pH levels in the skin too.
Mix some apple cider vinegar and honey in equal amounts and apply to the cuticles for 15 minutes before rinsing off. Adding coconut oil to the mixture adds extra hydraring benefits, and helps to protect the skin from excess damage.
8) Hydrating shampoo
Again, honey is good for hydration, and it also strengthens the hair follicles and scalp to prevent hair loss.
Mix some honey and your favourite shampoo together for a more emollient shampoo to give yourself healthy, lustrous hair.
If you’re into DIYs, then mix some honey, lemon juice and water in a bowl and apply to your hair for a more natural alternative, that’ll clean and balance the acidity levels in your hair.
You can mix your conditioner with honey as well for stronger, more glossier hair, or make your own by mixing equal parts of honey and coconut oil for the same effect. Leave in hair for up to 20 minutes for instant results.
10) Natural Hair Bleach
Honey releases hydrogen peroxide due to an enzyme that oxidizes in the sun. Adding honey to your locks as a treatment for an hour will help to lighten your hair naturally, whilst delivering moisture to the hair and protecting it from damage.
11) Sunburn treatment
When our skin is burnt, it becomes very sensitive and flaky. The anti-inflammatory and hydration properties in honey can aid burnt skin by soothing and relieving the pain whilst supplying nourishment to the skin deep down for a speedy recovery.
Mix honey and aloe gel in 1:2 ratios and apply to the effected area.
